Honolulu Community Action Program, Inc. (HCAP) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, delivering need-based human services to the economically challenged on the island of O‘ahu since 1965. Recognized as a Community Action Agency, HCAP’s mission is very deeply rooted in its responsiveness to the community and its needs.
BUSINESS TYPE: NonProfit
LOCATION: Honolulu, Hawaii
HCAP came to us wanting to dramatically dive into the modern era of the internet. While they had a previous website, it did not meet current web standards and was very difficult to edit — requiring advanced web design skills and expensive, proprietary software. They also had never started on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or YouTube. They had no web-based email list. So we embarked on a year long program, featuring Bare Feet Blogs’ partner, Roxanne Darling, as Social Media Executive in Residence. The hub to their new communications and outreach strategy was a new WordPress website, which could adequately feature the nine programs HCAP manages and also post their weekly news summaries. This development included visiting all of their satellite locations, taking photos and conducting interviews, designing and building the site, then training several staff to maintain it. We also designed and set up a MailChimp email newsletter for them, sorting and importing the nearly 1000 names they had collected. Lastly, we helped them get started and develop policies for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, while also taking part in the annual #GivingTuesday nonprofit social media campaign. You can learn more about the unique HCAP digital marketing project here on Bare FeetStudios.com. As a bonus, HCAP was featured in two separate articles in Pacific Business News – one was generated by Twitter interactions and the other by having great content on their new website!
THE CLIENT SAYS:
“I had a wonderful experience working with and learning from Roxanne for 6 months, from 2013-2014. Not only did she help the organization (HCAP) to build our social media presence and a new website, but she taught us how to do things ourselves, each and every step of the way.
Prior to working with Roxanne I had limited experience with WordPress and only personal experience on Social Media. Today, I love working with WordPress (though I did have my reservations at first). It’s extremely user friendly. I am able to easily make changes at any time and the website is immediately updated. To this day, I’m so glad we switched to WordPress and that I gained many new skills in the process.
Anytime the team had questions or concerns, Roxanne was able to walk us through and help us to understand why certain methods were beneficial and necessary. Although we had set meeting times, it was comforting to know that Roxanne was available to help troubleshoot and answer questions when we needed it.
By the end of our contract, I felt confident with my new skills and tools and I knew I would be able to continue to grow HCAP’s social media presence and web presence. After several months ‘on my own’ I have seen first hand the positive impact that having social media and a new website has had on the organization. I look forward to continuing to build on the skills that Roxanne taught me.”
